Teaming Up at EastBaySports.Com!

By: Bob Kaehms

It's finally happening! EastBaySports is beginning to collaborate with local schools and community papers to provide expanded coverage of the local sports scene. This week we start with content from both the Piedmont Post and California High school in San Ramon. While there are a few details in layout and workflow to work out, we think you will be pleasantly surprised.

I met Gray Cathrall, publisher of the Piedmont Post, through my outreach programs to schools. It turns out that Gray is very committed to the local community, as well as its local sports programs. A long time writer in the area, Gray was asked to start the Piedmont Post by the local community when the former Piedmont paper that he was working for was bought out. His local sports coverage and knowledge is extensive, and it will be fun working with him.

Brian Barr is the Journalism instructor at California High school. His class is the first to take the leap and experiment with publishing their sports content at EastBaySports.Com. Needless to say, this first week I am both thrilled, and overwhelmed - as what you see so far is just a sample of what they've sent me.

My hope now is that these two samples of collaboration set an example, and make it easier for other schools and newspapers to take the plunge. Hopefully, I'll figure out a better way to manage the load in the weeks to come.

Imagine a publishing system that starts to link up all of the schools in the area. My goal is that some of the original spirit of the internet and online collaboration will reach into the schools and help make this happen. If you are interested in helping, write me and let me know.

In the meantime, we still have eight digital cameras to give away. We will judge a set of entries each week that we have at least ten in hand.
